Safety Policy Creation with ChatGPT: Moving From Writer to Editor
Every written safety policy has the potential to be something great and something genuinely disappointing. I have worked at and with airports where the safety policy was the foundation of good decision-making. I touchstone that anchored logical and just decision making. Unfortunately, I have also seen them treated with absolute disdain, sometimes by the senior manager who signed it. And while artificial intelligence like ChatGPT isn’t going to fix that, it might reset the relationship between its words and the safety manager tasked with writing it.
What to expect from RCL2017...
After some very hectic years with little opportunity for writing, I am very excited to bringing The Runway Centreline back to life for 2017. I've been incubating a few ideas over the last 12 months or so and, while I have a lot of work in front of me, I think the next 12 months are going to be very exciting.
Like a Comfy Pair of Slippers
After a year away from airports, I couldn't stand it any longer. So, I'm back and this time I'm actually working for an airport operator. As such, I'll be swimming in airport stuff again and as I hit something interesting, I'll post it here. I'll also be posting a few projects I'm working on and a couple of handy hints and tips from time to time.

Work-Me & Blog-Me
AUGUST 2012 UPDATE: I've changed jobs since I posted this. However, I think it still works as a fair assessment of the relationship between this blog and my current job, which is not with the regulator. In this, the Web 2.0 world, connections can be made easily. There is no practical way to disconnect completely my blogging from my work.
And while my little disclaimer on the right is designed to create a barrier between the two, it probably doesn't address what has the potential to be a complex relationship.
Unhappy? No, but...
After a short hiatus and a new job, I've decided to start blogging again. This time on topics related to my new job. My old blog was slanted towards airport safety but with my shift into a more general and strategic role, I thought I'd shift the blogging to a new home and recommence putting my thoughts out there. The name of this blog comes from a chapter in James Reason's 1997 book, managing the risks of organisational accidents. In it, Professor Reason provided a number of reasons why the regulator's lot is an unhappy one.

Expectational Debt
Merlin Mann introduced this idea in his (relatively) new podcast, Back to Work and its a concept which, for me, hit a button. In a nut, it is the psychology burden one experiences from the expectations relating to one's outputs. These expectations can be real or perceived, from others or ourselves, they can seem minor in isolation but are cumulative in effect. The end result is that you carry around a great deal of ill-will, nearly all internal, due to the gap, again perceived or real, between those expectations and your output. I guess the key is to manage those expectations1 in such a way that minimises the debt. So, lets get those expectations out there...
